Co-wash Conditioner And Detangler

To co-wash or not to co-wash?

Co-washing is a big time-saver, you cleanse and condition in one go. However, there is a divided opinion on whether cowash is better than shampoo. There are many curl types who prefer co-wash over shampoo. So, co-wash depending on your hair needs and texture. You can use it often or in between shampooing. But remember to clarify your scalp often to avoid any kind of buildup, itchiness or microbial growths. And most important, if you are prone to severe hair fall (whatever the reason), please be vary of co-washing often, you don’t want any unnecessary scalp buildup.

Why co-wash may not work for everyone?

Shampoo does the actual cleansing. A cowash can contain gentle surfactants but may not be effective in removing excess oils, dirt, minerals or buildup. NaturallyCurly.com warns against co-washing for people with flaky scalp condition and or experiencing hair loss.

What I did not like about TGIN Quench 3-in-1 Co-wash?

The pump dispenser takes forever to dispense the co-wash. You really need a lot of co-wash for long hair, that means X number of pumps.

Also, the weather is amping up hair fall, I tend to lose more during co-washing and detangling. So, I will be trying this again in the summers when my hair needs that extra moisture.

How I use the TGIN Quench 3-in-1 Co-wash?

I don’t detangle hair before the wash. Start with wet hair and nicely coat my strands with the co-wash. I use about 5 pumps of cowash per side. I keep this on hair for 5-10 minutes to loosen any knots and scrub the scalp nicely. The co-wash does not produce any lather, but your hair feels enveloped with a light creamy layer.

I rinse this out by running water over my scalp. Next, I apply the co-wash on the length of my hair and detangle gently, remember to add water at this step for extra slip. You can finger-detangle to remove the tough knots first, then follow it with a Flexybrush, if you prefer. The brush slides smoothly through the hair. I rinse out the co-wash at this point with squish to condish, taking care not to let the squished conditioner water reach my scalp.

Remember, each co-wash is different and has to be used as per instructions on the product. Cowashing is a good way to detangle hair, keep the cowash on for 2-3 minutes to ease the knots. But, it is recommended to scrub your scalp nicely and clean any oils or dirt by this scrubbing motion. So rinse out the hair and scalp completely.

Personally, I prefer to co-wash in between washes and on days when I have little time to do a pre-poo or deep condition. I clarify on every third wash to avoid any scalp itchiness or product buildup. At times, when I use herbal hair packs for deep conditioning (on cleansed hair), these treatments tend to leave grainy remnants that are not easily rinsed out. A co-wash after the herbal DC, helps to detangle, cleanse and condition my hair.
